MedTech+ Art

X Ray vision is the first thing that came to my head when i reviewed the assignment this week.

In this week's lecture, the topics of medicine, technology, and art were focused on.  A couple hours before beginning to read this lecture, I ran across a video on "worldstarhiphop.com" called " Love has no labels". With this experiment,  a group of people created an experiment that showed how love is more than looks and other people's opinions.  The people observing this experiment only seen X-Ray's of the two lovers and could not make a judgement on that relationship based off of looks or gender.

I feel ultrasounds are a huge part to medical techonolgies as well. I can relate to this a lot because I have four little brothers and a ton of younger cousins so I've seen my fair share of ultrasounds. These are vital to parents knowing whether or not you'll be having a boy or a girl when having a child. It gives us a view of what the baby looks like before the baby is even born and other medical conditions the baby may have.

I also see plastic surgery as one of the most important medical technologies of the generation we live in today. Plastic surgery is  one of the most "to-do" things in today;'s world. Peoples' lives change once they get surgery and most celebrities are perfect examples of this.  A woman can get plastic surgery on her butt and make it much bigger and this can in fact lead to her being famous for it. I personally feel the Kardashians are a great example of how plastic surgery can imporve your life entirely.

Robotics + Art

An example of what I thought of while reviewing this lecture was the movie called " i,ROBOT." It's based in 2035 and highly intelligent robots fill the jobs of public service. In this movie, Will Smith plays the role of the main character (Detective Dell Spooner)  while investigating an apparent suicide of the main scientist for the robot creation, believes that these highly intelligent robots will take over the human race.  I feel these relate to the Japanese robots described by Machiko Kusahara in the lecture video below. The idea bought out is that the improvement of technology has expanded the role of robotics within our world.  These may eventually be what all of our world consists of because day by day people are losing more jobs to technology.

Machines have taken over the way we produce mass products. With this easy way of mass production, i feel we have lost the sense of true value because of it. Replicas are now an acceptable thing to purchase. People do not care if things are real or not, they just care about how it looks and how cool they'll look. This is apparent with the frenzy over Kanye West's Yeezy shoe. Yeezy's are the hottest shoes right now and people will do anything to buy them but they're very expenisve. Since they are so expensive to buy, people decide to buy cheaper/ fake Yeezy shoes to look cool.

I also found the Art bots link was intersting as well. People actually build these robots to compete in competitions with other robots made by other humans. The goal of these competitions are to see whose robot can do the most exotic specific tasks a robot is capable of doing but they're are many rules and regulations you must follow in order to make it fair for everyone. As a child, I loved transformers and I always wanted to be able to actually build one. So seeing that there is actually competitions for building great robots, fascinated me!

Math+Art

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMmq5B1LKDg

I really enjoyed looking over this week's lecture about Math and Art video. I enjoyed it because i can easily relate to it due to the fact my grandpa is an architect and I used to always go to work with him when i was little. I was fascinated by all the shapes and math that makes architecture what it is. It's definitely not an easy job to have and I used to make it hard on my grandpa by messing up all his drawings and all his plans! Math and art are the fundamentals of architecture.  You need math in order to precisely size the buildings you help build and you need art for your drawing to make your plan come to life.

The Golden Rectangle is brought to light in the lecture video below. I found this quite interesting because even though i see these two images above quite often, I never noticed the patterns they possess. Math plays a huge part in art, It makes it proportional and just overall makes a picture or building better. In the lecture video, the professor describes how important proportions are to a art.  The pyramids of Giza would have never been able to be created without mathematical calculations, its such a beautiful sight! This idea the Golden Rectangle is vital to the subjects of Math and Art.

In the reading called "Flatland" by Edwin A. Abbott, Abbott describes angles and how points of views are vital. In Part 1, Section 1, he talks about how things further away from us seem more transverse and flat but if you actually get closer to it, it looks way different.  When i was little, i used to play outside in a field, it was pretty big sometimes when things looked flat from a distance and then when you finally go up to it its much more detailed and not flat. i used think that was so cool!Perspective is key in the way we see things, and it matters.

Two cultures

For the majority of the week, I was unable to fully understand the ideas that C.P Snow brought to the world with his "Two Cultures" lecture. But once I watched the interview with Steven Pinker , I completely understood it.  He gave an example of music being a " Third culture" by saying an art such as music can be enlightened by the understanding of auditory perception. I've been loving music my entire life so being able to hear this example really helped me out with this unit.

C.P Snow talked about Two different cultures being completely different and not intervening with one another at all. This is currently present on the campus of UCLA. The Campus split into two different areas, South campus being for sciences and North for Humanities.  Professor Vensa also mentioned this in the lecture video and it's clearly present. Depending on your major, you might have all your classes on North campus and you may never go to South campus while getting your education here unless it's for a G.E.

Years after C.P Snow brought forth the idea of two cultures, the idea of a third culture came about. I want to be a sociology major and I feel  the third culture can be sociology because it's a social science. Sociology is the study of social behavior and uses various methods of investigation and critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about social order. I feel this brings together the two different cultures C.P Snow was referring too which would make it a third culture.
